I love blankets, there I said it!
Why is it that I can never seem to pass one up?
Recently while treasure hunting, I found this beautiful vintage feather comforter.
Never washing a vintage feather comforter before, I still could not pass it up!
I was hoping it would be big enough for my bed, but sigh, it’s not.
Yes it’s large, but not large enough for a king size bed.
My daughter is the lucky recipient of this wonderful cozy feather comforter.
But before putting this on her bed I needed to wash it.
I noticed it had a few area’s that needed to be repaired.
I took out my needle and thread to repair those small holes.
There were only a few of them.
Next it was time to wash this.
**Please note if your feather comforter says dry clean only, make sure that’s what you do!**
This is what I did to wash my vintage feather comforter.
(To wash a large feather comforter you will need a extra large washer and dryer)
I have a extra large front loader washing machine, and dryer.
Before adding the feather comforter to my machine, I sprinkled borax powder into my machine.
Follow the directions on the box on how much to use.
My feather comforter had a few stains, so I also sprayed Shout, a stain remover, on the stains to remove them in the wash.
Then I added my laundry soap.
I used my laundry soap which is BIZ.
This is an old and used feather comforter, and I really wanted it clean.
BIZ works great for getting stains out and I was told it was gentle enough to use on vintage fabric.
Make sure to put your washing machine setting on a gentle cycle.
I washed mine on warm.
After it’s done washing, it’s time to dry.
The feather comforter is going to be very heavy when it’s wet, so get ready to use those biceps!
This next step is very important so read on……
Place three tennis balls inside of the dryer.
Why?
Those tennis balls will keep the feathers from sticking together as it dries and your comforter will come out nice and fluffy.
**Make sure to set your dryer to a delicate cycle and medium heat**
This feather comforter is going to take several hours to dry, mine took 5 hours!
But, you must make sure to dry this completely in the dryer!
If not it will smell like a wet dog.
And I don’t think you want your feather comforter to smell like that……Yuck!
After spotting this feather comforter, a few days later I found the matching feather pillow and cover.
Guess what I will be doing today 😉

Nicely done. Thanks for the hint about
tennis balls in the dryer. I agree, Biz is good for stains. For stains, I’ve found through trial and error that Zout is good. Also, good old Dawn dishwashing detergent works well ,especially if the stain is petroleum or grease based. Of course, always do a test spot before using it.
When I launder a linen, if the fabric will withstand bei g in water, I put it in a soak cycle and let it sit, before laundering it on delicate. It hps to remove stains.

Oh I have heard zout is good too. Thanks Marilyn, great tips!

I don’t have your equipment, so I hand wash my feather comforter in the bathtub. Note: You will be able to see how dirty it was. Soak, swirl, swirl, swirl, for as long as 20 minutes. Drain.until it looks like no more is coming out. Do it again with clean water. After lengthy draining, get it into a laundry basket, or even something with wheels, and get it outside. If you have a clothesline, hopefully, as I do, there it stays until dry If no clothesline, use a railing, a fence, or chairs put together, a bench, a market umbrella, etc.. I leave mine extra time, maybe days, because when it comes in, it smells pure and sunshiny. I dry all my linens outside for that wonderful smell. It’s also a great disinfectant.

Thanks Cheryl, yes hand washing is a great alternative.

Great for washing a feather comforter. How does one laundry a feather mattress?
Anne says
Good question Gloria. I would not attempt to put a feather mattress in the wash. It would most likely need to be hand washed. And that would be quite a job.
