President Ulysses Grant and his family did not live here long. For a mansion it seems so small in today’s standards.
Some photos of the inside. You cannot walk in the rooms and there is limited space for taking photos. But here is a glimpse inside this mansion.Above the fireplace is a painting of Grants. Those black chairs are original. They are upholstered with silk.
The dining room and a painting of Julia Grant is above the fireplace. This is all original to the house even the china!
The bedrooms are small. And space is limited to taking photos. Here is a glimpse of on of Grants children’s room.See that chamber pot under the bed.
The beds were so small back then.It seemed most people were shorter.Even though this is a child’s bed they were all shorter back in that time.
Have you ever wanted to see what a General store looked like in 1860?This is a General store that down the street from Grants home. You cannot walk inside. But it is open to view through glass.Oh how I would love to walk in here.So many things I would love to have too!
Look at all those old bottles and packages! And that old scale too!
Some shots of the beautiful colors outside.
The view is amazing from Grants home.
A statue of Julia Grants wife. She has an amazing view of Galena!
Mr. Cottage took a photo of us girls look the fall colors! It was a chilly day but my daughter insisted on wearing a skirt.I know it is not sunny but I have sensitive eyes and do wear my sunglasses even in this light.
In the background is Grant’s home.
Before we left we also visited a little cabin house they have.It is part of the property. And is an example of how most people lived back in that time.
This house was not originally here but was moved from another location.A family with if I remember right six children lived in this home until 1972.It said a fire was built in the fireplace in the fall and lasted all winter! Can you imagine living in this small home with that many children? They must have gotten on each others nerves….. allot.Especially in the cold winter months! It is too dark and small of a space to photograph the inside. But it is very small as you can see from the outside.
I have more to share on Galena but I will break it up into two posts.
I am cleaning my garage this week and organizing things in my basement.I need some better light and I will share my completed kitchen. And you will again see some changes again in my kitchen!
Hope you are all safe from Hurricane/storm Sandy.

Oh how funny, Anne! I just posted a Galena tour last night. Do you mind if I include a link to your Galena post in my blog? Love that photo of the view from Grant’s home!

I love Galena! We have been there many times, I live in Chicago. Surprisingly, we have never gone into Grant’s home so I really love your pictures and those of the general store.
I’m really looking forward to more pictures and I’m so glad you had a good time!

Gorgeous vistas from Grant’s home! My father-in-law grew up with 5 siblings in a house almost as small as the cabin you photographed. It is hard to imagine that many people sharing that space. Nice photo of you and your daughter. She’s growing up so fast!

Galena is such a beautiful place to visit! You brought back happy memories for me. We visited when my oldest son was only two or three years old. His name is Grant so we took a lot of pictures of him in front of Grant’s home, but we didn’t tour the inside because we were afraid he’d be to disruptive. Touring old houses is not exactly a little boys idea of fun! 🙂
