This leather chair was found recently. As soon as I saw it I new I would be painting a leather chair.
Something I have not painted yet is leather.
I did paint a fabric chair that now feels like leather thanks to Annie Sloan paint and a little wax!
You can read about that HERE
This chair is for our desk in our den.
A room I really don’t show,because it is a work in progress.
This photo was taken with my phone hence it being a little grainy.
We had a leather chair in this room already but it was badly ripped, and was much too large for this room.
This chair was 10.00 it does have a few small tears but I thought being so cheap maybe I could find a way to salvage it.
I am a risk taker I have told you that before, never afraid to try something different I decided to go for it!
First cleaning this chair off really well.
I am sure you are wondering why I did not just leave it and not paint it. I wanted a different color for this room.
And I was hoping maybe…..just maybe the chalk paint may help sealing the rips.
I was never expecting this to look perfect and I never look for perfection in anything I use to decorate with.
This took three coats of Annie Sloan Coco and three coats of wax.I prefer to use Miss Mustard Seed’s wax,if you have not tried it you must!
It seals pieces perfectly and gives a nice shine.
I also love that it does not have much of a smell at all!
Lets look a little closer.
Keeping it real here, you can see by close inspection that little area that is a little cracked still.
I have tried fixing leather with repair kits before but they never really worked for me.
I will have to get experimental and see if something will work.
No worries this is going in our den and no one but my family will see this.
I opted not to paint the bottom but I did paint the arms.
I just sanded the arms slightly where I thought it would have wear on it.
Our den is located right off of our kitchen,it is not finished yet but I will give you a little peek at what’s in this room.
Trying to keep this neutral and a little masculine for my husband.
You could say this is a mini man cave.
Believe it or not our family room is a man cave, well sort of .
You see I never share our large tv.
It’s not very pretty so you won’t be seeing it in any photos.
But I am sure you have seen our speakers on the walls of our family room, surround sound.
This cabinet was painted a year ago.
Hmmm….. I don’t think I shared this before, probably because it is in this unfinished room.
Painted with Coco and highlighted with old white.
This stores our office supplies and is used as a tv stand too!
My husband enjoys watching a game while working on the computer.
This is to the side of the door and you can’t see this from the kitchen even with the doors open, yay for me!
I have been collecting some fun pieces for this room.
Like globes, books and some vintage camera’s.
Oh yes and vintage brown bottles.
Do you like collecting bottles?
I find myself picking these up whenever I find them.
Not just the brown ones either.
Do you remember my typewriter I found a few years ago?
Well this is it’s new home.
A little peek at a map I have on the wall.
Eventually this room will be done and I may share it.
This is the room with our large computer and printer.
It is looking better but still not a pretty room.
I am still deciding on window treatments, right now I just have blinds hanging.
I feel very confident that this paint will work great on this chair.
My fabric chair is holding up well and not a single crack on the finish even after sitting on it.
I am sure if this chair did not have a rip it would be perfect!
I will keep you posted in how this is holding up.
This chair will be used often.

I think it looks fantastic painted! I have to say, one good thing about living alone is not having to have a large TV or anything with surround sound. Blissful silence.

What a great idea to paint that chair! I love the color you chose. It seems that chalk paint can be used on just about everything. I love the accessories you’re using in your husbands “mini man cave”. I hope you’ll share it when it’s done.

I think it turned out great, what a great price on it too! I like how you left the bottom but painted the arms…it’s beautiful!

I recently painted a leather chair, too. Because ASCP did not come in the color I wanted, I first base-coated it x 2 in Pure White, and then went over it with latex paint in the color I wanted. Because I use the chair constantly, the old cracks have come through the latex but not the ASCP. I did use Annie Sloans clear wax as a finish. I am thinking of trying to mix an ASCP color close to the one I chose and giving it another shot. You will have to let me know how this holds up after being sat on all the time. No one really sees mine, either, because it is in my bathroom.

WOW Anne that leather chair turned out fabulous!! Love how you left the bottom stained.

Wow, that chair underwent quite a transformation! It looks great! Love the cabinet your TV is on too!
Betsy says
What an amazing transformation. I think the small cracks give your chair a lot of character. Great job!!

Anne-That looks terrific. I have painted a leather chair by spray painting it but never by brush painting. That turned out great. My chair is still holding up after 8 or 9 years of constant use. I love when you can salvage something and restore it in some way- xo Diana

Anne, the chair looks wonderful! I never go for perfection, either : ) I’ll be interested to see how the painted finish holds up after some use. It sure looks like you are putting together a wonderful collection for that room!

Hi Anne,
exact what I needed today !!!! My Chippendale 2 seater leather is in a slightly bad shape, I just say : CATS !!!
I thought about using AS dark wax to cover the holes. (dark brown leather) and painting just the wooden legs to fresh it up. Question : Why did you used MMS wax instead of AS ? Is there a difference ? I only used AS and I love it. Please, please take a lot of seats & tell us how it works ! Looks sooo great !!
Thank you !
Anne says
It was a personal choice for me to use her wax.I love that it is much safer and not toxic as most waxes. And hardly a smell at all.And it works beautifully on painted furniture.
Dani & cats says
Thank you for the info ! Yes, non -toxic is always a great choice ! I think I`ll have a new project…

Okay…I’m in love! It NEVER, in a HUNDRED YEARS would have dawned on me to paint leather…but I LOVE it! wow! Your coco cabinet is beautiful too! SOOO pretty! Can’t wait to see how it holds up…and am now officially “on the hunt” for one of my own to try it on. Well done, my friend!
Anne says
Thank you Kimberly! I am a big risk taker.Especially when it is a chair that did not cost very much.I had nothing to lose 🙂

Jeanne says
Oh goody! I’ve been waiting for you to post about this leather chair transformation. Not that I have any leather furniture to paint, but you never know when I may come across something leather. I would never have imagined that you could paint leather! The chair looks gorgeous. My mind is spinning with all the possibilities!

I love the transformation on the chair Anne and don’t mind the small imperfections you are concerned about. I think they add character.
Yesica says
I love the chair and im thinking on doing something similar with my sofa.. but i have a question about the colour.. Was that Coco? I would like a colour like the one you got but coco looks very grey on the chart .. and very creamy on your chair.. Thanks!
Anne says
Yes the Yesica, the color I used was Coco.Sometimes it can look a little different on a chart. It is a little darker than French Linen.Once you add the wax it deepens the color.I don’t think the Coco looks gray.Hope that helps 🙂
Michelle says
Nice work! I was wondering: what do you think would happen if you applied clear Annie Sloan wax to the cracks in the leather, then applied Chalk Paint and finally sealed it with more clear wax?
Anne says
Thanks Michelle, yes that is what I did actually, most is holding up since doing this many months ago, but some is starting to crack again. This was a cheap thrift find so it was not a big deal.I may repaint and wax again to see if anything happens. The rest of the leather has held up well. It’s not wearing or cracking anywhere else.Just where the cracks were originally. And this chair is sat on constantly.
Susan says
wondering how the painted chair held up?
