So I had an idea…. dyeing fabric with paint…yeah what would happen if I used Vintage Market And Design paint to dye some fabric.
I mean really what could go wrong?
I love trying different techniques and I am quite a risk taker.
And since this company shares that you can use VMD paint on fabric why not try using it to dye fabric?
A few weeks ago I came across a pair of these pillow covers.
I wanted to dye these pink, but I only had Porcelain which is a very pale pink.
I also had Anita’s all purpose acrylic paint in vivid pink…perfect….let’s mix the two in water and see what happens.
I grabbed a reusable container that I was storing leftovers, but will now only be used for crafting.
I did not measure,I just poured about a silver dollar amount of Vintage Market and Design paint in the container, then I added water.
That’s how you roll too right….just a little of this and a little of that…it’s all good!
Then I added enough water to cover the piece I was dyeing.
Since the color was not dark enough I added the acrylic paint until I got the color I wanted, and the color I thought would absorb in the fabric.
I also stirred this really well with a paint stick before adding the fabric piece.
Make sure to wear gloves this is messy, but fun!
I let this soak for 4 hours agitating it with my gloved hands while it was in the container.
When I got the desired result I rinsed it well in cold water and then stuck it in the dryer.
You can see the side by side, the one of the left is the pink piece the other is the matching piece.
But I am not done with this piece just yet.
I still think it needs a little something else, maybe a transfer graphic.
Working on that tomorrow.
Love this soft pink color,It’s nice to have another alternative for dyeing fabrics.
This has opened up a whole new world for me,dyeing fabric with paint!
This was super easy to do,and it makes each piece custom because you never know what color you will get.
It really depends on the color you achieve and the time you have this soaking.
Next …I need to work at dyeing the other pillow cover.
These will be listed in the shop soon.
Speaking of my shop I just listed more treasures….
Like this beautiful shabby bowl.
And these gorgeous dishes….love the delicate roses on them.
I have many pieces of this gorgeous set.
And a pair of these sweet Laura Ashely pillows.
More coming soon!

That was a great idea to try paint to dye your fabric. Hope you can get the other one to match since you didn’t use a formula.
Anne says
Well if it’s not a total match Kelly it’s okay because I don’t like things matching anyway.I never seek perfection 🙂
Jonni @ Jasper's Cottage says

How many times did you rinse the pillow cover when you got the desired color? Love this idea. Can’t wait to try it.
Anne says
Becky I kept rinsing until the water was clear.
Barbara Ann says
I am assuming the fabric was 100 % cotton. Or did it have some poly in it? I have thought about doing this with a washed drop cloth. Otherwise I was just gonna paint it. What do you think?
