Must Have Paint Tools And Supplies
I have a few must have paint tools and supplies that I always need to have on hand. Whether I’m painting a wall or a piece of furniture these paint tools and supplies need to be at my fingertips. I’ve learned from the mistakes after painting many walls and furniture pieces over the years. This is a list of must have paint tools and supplies that you can use as a guide before starting a new project. I’ve made mistakes like using painters tape for cutting out the ceiling or using a edger tool to cut my ceiling. All I did using these tools was make more of a mess.
Best Paint Tools And Supplies
Purdy paint brushes are one of my favorite brushes to use. The are one of the best quality paint brushes to use. I never have bristle shedding and they apply paint beautifully. My favorite is the angled sash brush. I prefer the sash as I can use it to cut my ceiling and I can also use it on detailed areas on a piece of furniture. These always clean up well for me too. I usually use hot water to clean mine off. But here are a few tips on cleaning paint brushes.
I hate rolling paint on my wall only to start seeing my roller shed. It’s the absolute worst! I started using these rollers and they never shed, plus they absorb the paint making it roll nicely and evenly onto the wall without needing to repeatedly dip for more paint.
Whether I’m painting a wall or a painting a piece of furniture a handled paint cup is a must have. I’ve had mine for years. So why is it so important? It makes my painting so much easier. When I’m cutting my ceilings I like using my paint cup as it makes it much easier to hold than a paint can. I add as much paint as I need. Then as I’m on my ladder the handle makes it easy to grip and hold while I’m doing the cutting. I also like mixing paints in my cup that I’m going to use on a piece of furniture. Since it’s plastic it’s always easy to clean.
If you’re not a neat painter like me than make sure that you always have these with you when you’re painting. When you make a mistake or drip paint on your floor you can use the wipes for a quick and easy clean up.
These are great to use if you feel like baby wipes are wasteful. Make sure to soak them with water and a little soap, but wring them out so they are not drippy wet. Keep them next to you as you’re painting. These can be washed at least once before you have to throw them out.
This is a must have whether you are painting a piece of furniture or a wall. I prefer to use the canvas drop cloths with the polycoated backing. That way if you spill paint it won’t seep through to the other side. Make sure to pick up a few of these. If you’re painting a wall you will need one for the area you are working in and another for your paint and supplies. When you’re painting furniture it’s good to have at least two. Especially if you are painting a large piece of furniture or you’re painting several pieces at a time, or you are painting a dresser and drawers. Always have at least two of these on hand.
These are always good to have when you’re painting. So imagine that you’re painting a room or a piece of furniture. But you can’t finish because you have to run an errand or you have a child at school. You don’t have time to rinse the brush out and you don’t want to leave it out because we all know what will happen if you do. Get a zip lock bag and place your paint brush in that bag then place your brush that’s in the bag into your refrigerator. This will keep your paint brush from drying out. I’ve used this trick for many years. I’ve even placed it in my freezer overnight if I know I won’t be painting until the next day but didn’t have time to clean it, or let’s be honest, to lazy to clean it. If you do place it in the freezer before using it, run it under warm/hot water with the bag on until the paint starts to thaw. This will not ruin your brush or mess up the paint.
I prefer the plastic over the metal trays. They are much easier to clean up with hot water. I can get all of the paint off of a plastic tray unlike a metal tray. Metal also seems to rust and I’ve always preferred the plastic. Just don’t get the cheap flimsy plastic trays. You’ll end up making a mess. Make sure to purchase the thicker molded trays.
This is a must have if you want to reuse rollers. I try to reuse my rollers for as long as I can. It’s less wasteful and it will save you money. Just run your roller under warm/hot water (use caution if you use hot water) and use the tool to scrap off your roller. Don’t put too much pressure on your brush as you’re using the tool. You don’t want to ruin your roller.
This is only time that I use painters tape. It’s when I’m painting furniture and I don’t want paint in certain areas of my piece or I’m creating a design. I never use this for my walls or trim. I find that when I use painters tape on my walls I make more of a mess. Read my post on how to paint without using painters tape.
I hope that these tips are helpful to you when you’re starting your next painting project. If you have any painting tips or favorite paint supplies I’d love to know. Please leave a comment below and share.

I love to paint furniture and am constantly painting my
walls after living with the colors for a few months or
more! I am not a winter person and find myself longing for sunshine!
Winter is the time of year that I need to keep busy….
hence I love to paint! Beside painting furniture or walls….
I find creating signs helps with the winter blues..Thank you for this blog…..each and every blog brings learning
and interest.

Thx for sharing great tips Anne. Always good to get some ideas whether a painter or not. According to hubs I am worst painter and messiest painter. OOh well different strokes.
I have hard time dealing with dark dreary days, wishing hubs would go somewhere so I can have some peace. little too much togetherness being cooped up. Poor dog/cat get cabin fever also. We know our cat has had enuf when he starts running thru house and dog is behind him. They’re so funny to watch. Makes me wish I could run with them. Get tired of cleaning for something to do. Need to clean out sewing room so can make couple new table runners or new bedroom curtains or anything.
Have new sewing machine I got last year, have hardly used it. Do want to make new bedroom curtains, have fabric was going to use for something else but will work for curtains. Need something heavy to help keep room warmer.
It’s not very cold anymore at all but a muddy slushy mess everywhere after good snowfall last week then we got freezing rain this week, yuk. Even chickens are staying in coop, was watching them walking, they stop to shake one leg then the other. Only getting one egg a day.
Guess not too late to go to Habitat, been wanting to go, feels like some things there are calling my name, lol. Haven’t gotten to go there since before holidays.
Hope cabin fever leaves you be, wrap up really good, go for little walk or walk in a mall, helps to get energy expended.
Have great weekend

I am going to paint a Jenny Lind crib. I want to use chalk paint for the ease aspect as well as the non toxic aspect. However, I am worried about trying to paint all those spindles with a brush. Any ideas?

The weather here in Ohio is warm one day and freezing the next. I so look forward to the sunny days when we have them few and far between. Dreary days definitely make me want to stay in bed for awhile in the morning unless I have a project I went to get started right away in the morning. My son is moving out in a couple weeks (the last of 3 to leave) so I decided to cope with the depression of him leaving I would do some redecorating. I picked out some paint for the kitchen which is the first room I want to start with so will have plenty to do to keep from missing him too much! Then I will fix up his bedroom for when my grandson comes to visit. I enjoy seeing all your lovely projects and great tips!

That’s good to know that I should use two drop cloths when I paint my walls so that I can have one for the supplies and one for the actual area. I’m going to be painting the walls in my kitchen a nice red color. First, though, I’ll need to find somewhere to get paint supplies like a drop cloth.
