HOW TO AVOID CAKEY PATCHY MAKEUP
I’m going to show you how to avoid cakey and patching makeup. This is one thing so many people struggle with. Most will blame it on the foundation or powder products but it has nothing to do with products and all about the preparation before application.
PREPPING FOR MAKEUP APPLICATION
You should have a basic skincare routine. Every single morning you should be washing your face. This is an important step on how to avoid cakey patchy makeup. If you just apply makeup to a face that still has last nights creams and serums on it, your makeup isn’t going to sit well on the skin.
If you have dry skin I recommend using a cream cleanser. Next you’ll want to exfoliate. I recommend using an acid such as lactic, salicylic, or glycolic acid. You never use all of these at once nor do you use one everyday. I recommend using an acid 2-3 times a week. What an acid will do is it will exfoliate the dead skin cells off of your face.
If you had dead skin sitting on your face how do you think your makeup is going to look? Find one that’s
gentle enough for your skin.
Next you want to hydrate your skin. I personally love using Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream(affiliate). It’s very pricey but worth it. I med or large jar last months and sometimes a year. I use a pea size amount and apply it to my face and neck. If that’s not in your budget look for a moisturizer that’s hydrating and one that will work under your makeup.
Prepping the skin will makeup the canvas (your face) ready for makeup. It will go on like a dream and it will look beautiful.
MAKEUP APPLICATION TIPS
Once you’re done prepping your skin for makeup you’re ready for application. When you’re applying your foundation less is best. Please do not follow the tips of the large TikTok accounts. So many apply way too much foundation. It’s not going to lay well, it won’t last and it will look cakey and patchy despite prepping your skin first. Depending on the foundation I use between one pump to 1 1/2 pumps for my entire face and neck. I always work the foundation down to my neck.
I apply it with my fingers then I use a brush to blend it in. You can also use a damp makeup sponge. But applying it with my fingers helps to press it into my pores making my foundation look smooth and flawless.
IMPORTANT STEP
As someone with oily skin I always set my makeup with powder. If you have dry skin there are powders that are more hydrating. One thing to remember, just like with foundation application, less is more.
Don’t apply too much powder. I use a big fluffy brush to apply my setting powder. After I apply my setting powder I’ll go in and apply all my other powders such as a blush, bronzer, highlighter. Then I’ll spray Mac Fix Plus on top. This spray is a miracle! It will melt all of your powders into your skin and it won’t look powdery even if you have dry skin!
