Brick Wall Using A Cutting Edge Stencil
Since living in our home I’ve totally hit a brick wall (no pun intended) when it came to decorating my husbands office. I’ve gone back and fourth over the years trying to figure out what to do. Since this room is primarily used by my husband I wanted to sort of create a man cave. But since it’s so small, we’ll just call it a man hut, which sounds so sad doesn’t it. Well, no worries, he’s pretty happy with his new man hut.

My husband is a big sports fan, but I didn’t want to paint the room and stick a big fat head on his wall. Have you heard about those? They are huge photos that you can get and stick them on a wall. You can get a team logo and athlete and more. And I personally think they’re tacky. Sorry, I hope I don’t offend anyone. I’m sure some people think my style is tacky, and that’s okay.
My idea for his room came from an old Chicago Cubs score card that I found. It had an advertisement on the back and immediately I thought of an old ghost advertisement on a brick wall. This is going to be a two part post.
Have you ever seen one of those ghost signs? Next time you’re in the city, and an older neighborhood, look at those old buildings, you’ll see those old ghost signs. They are whats left of advertisements from past years. Back when they used lead paints. You can read about how I added an old advertisement to this faux brick wall HERE.
Below is what this room looked like before I started the project. Well, not exactly, I didn’t have furniture all over the place, but it has been pretty empty and boring. So, why not add a brick wall.
Adding a faux brick was was super easy to do using this stencil from Cutting Edge Stencils. I decided on the color that I wanted for the brick. I mixed White Lace and Mocha to create a soft brown.
I started my brick wall stencil in the middle and worked my way towards the outer wall. I used painters tape to hold my brick wall stencil in place. To make it easier, and I do like things easier. I used a foam roller to apply my paint.
But, make sure that you blot off some of the paint from your foam roller before adding it to your brick wall stencil or it will bleed, and that won’t be very pretty.
The process was similar to my painted deck floor, you can read about that HERE.
The foam roller made this so easy to do and some areas rolled on lighter than others, which created highlights on the brick. This makes it look more natural.
Using this brick stencil was very easy, but you need a little patience as you get the top , bottom and sides. And let’s be honest I don’t always have patience, but I have to admit I did pretty good at not throwing any temper tantrums. And tend to do that on occasion since I started going through menopause. Yeah, menopause sucks!
Here’s A Little Tip
When you are adding your side stencil and top stencil make sure to add your painters tape. If not you will most likely get paint on your wall. I’m speaking from experience, so don’t do what I did, do what I’m telling you to do. Sorry if I’m sounding bossy , just trying to help so you don’t end up frustrated and drinking a bottle of wine.
Oh and even if you do use paint, you may still end up with a little paint on your wall. But don’t freak out, you can just touch it up, no biggie. You can see a few bricks bled a little. That sounds bad doesn’t it, but it’s really not bad and it’s no biggie I pinky promise.
As I was working and I had an oops, I stopped painting, grabbed a glass of wine, took a sip or two, then grabbed a few paper towels , sprayed a little water on my paper towel and wiped it off before it had time to dry. Any other boo-boos I fixed when I was finished stenciling the wall.
So here’s where I finished my brick wall. It really changed this room completely. But I’m not finished. To read the rest of this tutorial Click HERE.

I love your brick wall, and I can’t wait to see the room completed.
I would love to do this exact same stencil on the wall by my front door, I’m trying to make an entry way and I think that would define the area really well. Thank you for sharing, it really has me thinking.
