You're going to want a comfy chair and a cup of coffee or glass of wine, this is a long post ;-) Three years ago, I updated my daughter's bedroom on a budget. She was thirteen at the time, and she was ready for a change, but not a big change. The biggest change for her was getting a new vintage bed. The bed that she had in her room at that time was the first bed she had ever had. She was only a year old, and went from her crib to a bed. That was a huge change for her, so the colors and style was very subtle in her first big room transformation. This time we wanted to make a bigger change. Let's review some of the changes in her room as I share how to update a teen bedroom on a budget. The walls have been painted Zicron a color from Sherwin Williams. I didn't use Sherwin ... View Post
How To Update Curtain Finials
This is the last project of this series " How To Update A Teen Bedroom". As I've shared I'm cheap, so I've been reusing everything I can in her room, including her curtain finials. Her curtain rods are fine and don't need a change those. So what did I do to change her finials? Well, it was very simply actually! I pulled out my Heirloom Traditions paint in Synergy, the same color that I used to highlight the details on her furniture. It's a beautiful turquoise color that reminds me of vintage cars. Her finials are glass, which is no problem, because this paint adheres to any surface. So, my first thought was just paint these with two coats of Synergy, then apply a clear top coat and that's it. But, once I painted these, I was like, these are b-o-r-i-n-g! I had an a-ha moment. I ... View Post
How To Reupholster A Bench Or A Chair
Well, I'm getting closer to showing you the big reveal of my daughter's bedroom transformation. But before I do that, I'd like to share a few more projects that I did to update her room. I shared that I've been reusing as much as I can in her room to save money. Today I'm going to show you how to reupholster a bench. You can use this same technique if you're reupholstering a chair, as in a dining room chair. You know, a chair that has a removable seat. Anyway, this is super easy to do. And don't worry, you don't have to own a fancy stapler. I'm using a manual stapler that I bought years ago at the home improvement store. To make this easy for you to see and understand, I'm sharing this tutorial on a video. I don't know about you, but I am a visual person when it comes to ... View Post
How To Update A Lampshade Because I’m Cheap
Have I ever shared the fact that I'm cheap? Yeah, I really am. I don't like spending more money than I need to on things. I may have gotten that from my Grandfather. He influenced me in that way, and since I spent a lot of time with him, it must have rubbed off. I grew up with my Grandfather because, well, he lived with us. My Grandmother died before I was born, and I was named after her. This was on my Father's side. My Grandfather would always tell us to finish eating, that there are starving children that would love to finish what we were eating. I bet some of you heard that growing up too. My Grandfather also worked for McDonald's up into his late 80's. He walked to and from work everyday, because he didn't drive. And each day he would bring home McDonald's hamburgers ... View Post
How To Paint Furniture Tips
I'm moving in to my daughter's room! Ha, yeah right, I'm sure that she would love that! Well, it's just that I'm loving how her room is coming together! Ah, the mix of grey and turquoise is making me happy. So much so that I decided to have my toes painted turquoise the other day when I had my pedicure! Let me up date on what I've been doing in case you missed anything. I painted her room Zicron, which is a light silver grey. I shared this trick painting the walls without using painters tape HERE. Then I shared how to easily add an accent wall using stencils. You can read about that HERE. Next, I shared how to hem curtains without sewing. You can read about that HERE. And today I'm sharing tips on painting furniture. I see that one of my handles is a bit cooked in ... View Post
How To Keep Your Teenager Safe Lessons Learned
Today I'm getting off topic with a serious post. I'm talking about how to keep your teenager safe, and sharing my lessons learned. When my daughter was a toddler, I thought the scariest thing would be when she started to walk. But once she started walking, all was fine. Then she got her driver's permit, I thought that would have been the scariest moment. But, she's doing great driving, although she doesn't have her license yet, maybe over the summer. Both of those were scary for me as a parent. But nothing prepared me for what happened this weekend. It's probably every father's worst nightmare, about there daughter. I decided to share my experience hoping that it might help you or someone that you know with a child. Instead of writing the post, I decided to share my story on a ... View Post
